Lots of people are looking for jobs where they can work from home. There are differences between work-from-home, telework and telecommute. Here’s a brief rundown.
Work from home – This can include telecommuters, but is often self-employed individuals who have a home office. This category includes individuals with a consultant business and those who sell products, such as Tupperware, Arbonne, and Mary Kay.
Telework – This category can include telecommuters, as telework means replacing commuting with telecommunications links. While telework includes working from a home office it also includes working at a telework center – which is a location closer to home than the office but a place where others, who are not necessarily colleagues, might also work.
Telecommuting – In general this is referred to as being linked to your company’s communications systems and working from home either full or part-time. While telecommuting is also “work-from-home’, the understanding is that “work-from-home” is not telecommuting, as you are not connected to a company’s system.
These definitions are guidelines, and can be confusing. You can read more about the differences and similarities in this post.
